TIP OF THE WEEK: Hitting Approach: Avoiding the Pitch

When a pitch comes too far inside, turn your front shoulder toward the backstop and drop the bat head to the ground. This protects your head and other less meaty parts of your body. Remember, you've already started the turn by initiating your stride as the pitcher began her delivery. This is simply a continuation of that.
©2003 Sport Moves

TIP OF THE WEEK: Hitting - Before the Pitch: Focus on Release

As you wait for the pitch, focus on the area of the pitcher's hip from where the ball will be released. At the release point, shift your focus to the ball. Concentrate on trying to pick up the spin of the ball as it leaves the pitcher's hand—that will help you follow the ball to the point of contact.
Watching the ball's spin will also help you learn to distinguish between types of pitches.
©2003 Sport Moves

TIP OF THE WEEK: Hitting Approach: Be A Hitter

Be aggressive at bat. Prepare to hit every pitch: Take your stance, focus, trigger, stride and pivot. Then commit yes or no.
Be selective early—look for a certain pitch in a certain area. If you don't get it, let it go. With two strikes, be aggressive but less selective. Make your zone a little bigger—don't let the umpire call you out.
Concentrate on keeping your hands relaxed and inside, and try to hit the ball back up the middle. Put the ball in play...good things may happen.
©2003 Sport Moves
